Yes, converting HEIC to JPG loses a small amount of quality, and the file roughly doubles in size. At quality 90 and above the difference is very hard to see on an ordinary photograph. At quality 70 and below it becomes visible in skies, skin and other smooth areas.
Both formats are lossy, so the conversion decodes the High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) file and encodes a new JPEG. That second encode discards a little detail from an image that was already imperfect. The loss is real and, for most purposes, unimportant.
How much quality is lost
At quality 90 the loss is invisible at normal viewing size and detectable only by comparing files pixel by pixel. The damage concentrates in specific places rather than spreading evenly across the picture.
- Smooth gradients such as a clear sky show faint banding first, where a gradual colour change becomes visible steps.
- Fine texture such as hair, fabric weave and foliage softens slightly.
- High contrast edges such as dark text on white can pick up a faint halo.

Why the file gets bigger
HEIC is roughly twice as efficient as JPEG, so the same photograph typically comes out about twice as large. The size change surprises people more than the quality change does.
The reason is age. JPEG was standardised in 1992 and its compression methods date from that decade. HEIC uses High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), designed 20 years later, which predicts pixel values far more cleverly and needs fewer bits to describe the same picture. A 2 MB HEIC file becoming a 4 MB JPEG is the expected result rather than a fault in the conversion.
Quality settings and what they cost

When the loss actually matters
The loss matters when the photograph will be edited heavily afterwards, printed large, or converted again later. For viewing, sharing and uploading, it does not matter at all.
Heavy editing is the clearest case. Raising shadows, pushing contrast or recovering a blown sky amplifies compression artefacts that were previously invisible, so an edit applied to a quality 75 JPEG produces worse results than the same edit applied to the HEIC original. Anyone planning to edit should keep the HEIC files and convert only the finished exports.
How to convert with the least loss
To keep as much detail as possible, follow these 5 rules.
- Convert from the original HEIC file rather than from a copy that has already passed through a messaging app.
- Set quality to 90 for anything you intend to keep, since the extra file size is cheap and the detail is not recoverable later.
- Convert once. Each additional lossy save adds damage the next one cannot undo.
- Resize before converting when the destination has a fixed display size, because resizing first means compression has less work to do.
- Keep the HEIC originals until you have checked the converted files.
Avoiding the loss entirely
Convert to WebP or AVIF instead of JPEG when size matters more than universal compatibility. Both formats land close to the original HEIC file size, so the doubling problem disappears.
WebP is supported by every current browser and works well as a website format. AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) compresses harder still on large photographs and encodes more slowly. Neither format is accepted by government upload forms, and both remain unreliable in email, so JPEG stays the right answer whenever the destination is a form or an inbox.
What does not change during conversion

Comparing 2 files honestly
Open both images at 100 percent zoom on the same screen and look at the same region, because thumbnails hide compression damage completely. Comparing at a reduced size shows nothing useful, since the reduction removes the detail under examination.
- Zoom to 100 percent rather than fitting the image to the window.
- Look at a smooth area such as sky or a plain wall, where banding shows first.
- Look at a high contrast edge, where halos appear before anything else changes.
- Switch between the 2 files in the same position rather than viewing them side by side.
- Judge on a normal screen, since a photograph inspected at 400 percent is not being viewed the way anyone will see it.
Does the conversion change dimensions or orientation
No, pixel dimensions and orientation are preserved unless you deliberately resize. A 3024 by 4032 HEIC photograph becomes a 3024 by 4032 JPEG, with the same crop and the same rotation.
Orientation deserves a brief mention because it fails occasionally with poor converters. Cameras record rotation as a metadata flag rather than by rotating the pixels, and a converter that drops the flag produces photographs lying on their side. Checking 3 or 4 portrait photographs after a large batch confirms the flag survived, and it takes less time than fixing hundreds of files later.
Is a converted JPEG good enough for printing
Yes, a quality 90 JPEG prints indistinguishably from the HEIC original at any normal print size. Print shops have accepted JPEG for decades, and most do not accept HEIC at all.
Resolution matters more than format for printing. A 12 megapixel photograph prints cleanly up to around A3 at 300 dots per inch, whatever format carries it.
