Convert GIF to WebP in 3 Steps

No account, no install, no queue. Drop your GIF files in and the WebP versions are ready to download.

  1. Step 1

    Drop your images in

Drag files onto the page, click to browse, or drop in a ZIP and every supported image inside is pulled out. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP all work, mixed together in the same batch.

  2. Step 2

    Adjust if you want to

Choose your output format and drag the quality slider. That is the whole setup. Settings holds a KB target, resizing and batch renaming if you want them, and can stay closed if you do not.

  3. Step 3

    Download your WebP files

Conversion starts on its own, so there is usually nothing to press. Batches over 40 wait for one click so nothing runs away with your machine. Download files one at a time or take the whole batch as a single ZIP.

Why Convert GIF to WebP?

GIF was created in 1987. Before the web existed. It was designed for dial-up modems, 256-color displays, and file sizes measured in kilobytes. Today it's one of the most bloated, inefficient formats still in mainstream use. GIF's core problems are fundamental: a hard limit of 256 colors, LZW compression that hasn't improved in four decades, and no path to modern quality. WebP solves all of this. Full color depth, modern compression that cuts file sizes by 50–80% compared to GIF, and full support in every modern browser. Converting your GIF library to WebP is one of the highest-impact optimizations you can make to any web page that uses images.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was invented in 1987 and remains largely unchanged. Its 256-color palette limit causes visible color banding on any image with gradients or photographic content. Its LZW compression algorithm is vastly less efficient than modern codecs. Despite these limitations, GIF persists on the web primarily due to cultural inertia. It's still the default format for many meme and reaction image workflows. For static images especially, the case for moving to WebP is overwhelming.

Created 1987. Widely supported everywhere
Hard limit of 256 colors per frame
Extremely large files for photographic content
Outdated LZW compression. No modern improvement
WebP

WebP Image Format

WebP is Google's modern web format. 25–34% smaller than JPEG and dramatically smaller than GIF for equivalent visual quality. It supports the full 16 million color range, far surpassing GIF's 256-color cap. Full alpha transparency is supported without the binary on/off limitation of GIF. For static GIF images, converting to WebP typically reduces file size by 50–80% with noticeably better image quality. Every major browser supports WebP without question.

50–80% smaller than GIF in most cases

Full alpha transparency support
Supported by all modern browsers

Ditch 1987. Ship Modern.

GIF belongs in a museum. WebP belongs on your website. Convert your entire GIF library in one batch and watch your page weights drop.

True Bulk Conversion

Convert 10 or 500+ GIF files to WebP in one batch. No file limits, no throttling. Process your entire image library in a single run.

100% Private & Secure

Client-side only. Your GIF files never leave your device. No server, no cloud, no third party sees your images at any point during conversion.

Adjustable Quality Control

Set WebP quality from 1 to 100. For GIF-sourced images, quality 85–90 delivers excellent results. Because GIF is already limited to 256 colors, WebP at any quality will typically look better and be much smaller.

ZIP Upload & Download

Upload a ZIP of GIF files. Download all converted WebP images as a single ZIP. Perfect for bulk web asset updates and icon library migrations.

Batch File Renaming

Set a custom prefix, separator, numbering, and.webp extension. Preview the filename pattern before downloading your converted batch.

Need WebP files under 150 KB for a specific CMS upload limit or CDN budget? Set a target KB and the tool finds the optimal quality per image automatically.

Works on Every Device

Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, Android. Any modern browser runs the conversion with no installation required.

Selective Processing

Upload a large GIF library and select only the specific images you need as WebP. Only those are converted. No pre-filtering required before uploading.

Full Transparency Preserved

GIF supports binary (on/off) transparency. WebP upgrades this to full alpha channel transparency. Your converted images retain transparency with smoother edges. Need maximum compatibility? Our GIF to JPEG converter fills transparency with white for universal support.

When You Need GIF to WebP

Any time you have GIFs on a website, converting to WebP is a quick win for performance and quality.

Web Performance Optimization

GIF is one of the heaviest formats on the web by byte-per-quality ratio. If your site uses GIF images, icons, illustrations, reaction images, meme-style content, converting them all to WebP can meaningfully reduce total page weight and improve load times, Core Web Vitals scores, and SEO rankings.

Icon & Illustration Libraries

Legacy icon sets and illustration libraries often ship in GIF format. Particularly older clip art, emoji-style graphics, and flat icon packs. Converting to WebP replaces the 256-color limitation with full color fidelity and dramatically reduces file sizes, making your icons sharper on high-DPI screens.

Meme & Reaction Image Archives

Many meme and reaction image archives store content as GIF. Even static ones. Converting static GIFs to WebP significantly reduces storage requirements and server bandwidth costs while improving image quality by removing the 256-color palette restriction that causes color banding.

CMS & Blog Asset Migration

If you're migrating a WordPress, Drupal, or other CMS site that accumulated GIF assets over the years, converting the image library to WebP as part of the migration cuts server storage requirements and dramatically improves page performance without any visual trade-offs.

Email Template Asset Conversion

Email templates often include GIF images for decorative elements, dividers, and icons. Converting these to WebP reduces total asset size significantly. Note that for email clients with limited WebP support, GIF to JPEG or keeping the original GIF may be more appropriate for the email context itself.

Social & Community Platform Assets

Community platforms, forums, and social tools often allow GIF uploads for avatars, stickers, and decorative elements. When you control the platform, converting uploaded GIFs to WebP on the server side, or pre-converting your own assets, reduces storage and bandwidth costs across all users.

  • No signup, no email, no "check your inbox for the download link". Opened the page, dropped the GIF files, had WebP files thirty seconds later.

  • Runs fine on a locked-down work laptop where I cannot install anything. That is the entire reason I found this in the first place.

  • The ZIP support is underrated. Our photographer sends everything as one archive. I drop the whole.zip in, it pulls out every GIF file, converts them to WebP, and hands back a single ZIP to download. Two clicks for the entire job.

  • Clear error messages when something is wrong. I had a file that was a renamed GIF and it told me the contents did not match the extension rather than just failing silently.

  • The thing that sold me is that there is no upload. I opened devtools, converted twenty GIF files to WebP, and watched the network panel stay empty. That is a real privacy claim, not marketing copy.

  • We migrate client media libraries and there are always hundreds of GIF assets. Being able to convert them all to WebP in a couple of batches instead of one at a time has genuinely saved days of work this year.

  • The batch renaming is a small thing that saves a lot of tedium. Prefix, separator, starting number, and the whole WebP batch comes out named properly for the CMS instead of DSC_0481.

  • I was paying for Adobe Express almost entirely to batch-convert GIF to WebP. Cancelled it two months ago and have not missed it once. The output is the same and the workflow is faster.

  • I was sceptical about the target size mode but it works properly. Asked for under 200 KB and every WebP file came in just under, with the quality it could manage at that budget rather than some fixed preset.

  • Coming from GIF, the thing you notice immediately is the size difference. WebP gives me small files with transparency intact and my page weight dropped noticeably after the swap.

GIF to WebP Conversion and Compression Explained

What changes when you convert GIF to WebP, what it costs, and how to pick a quality setting you will not regret.

GIF was designed in 1987 for 256-colour displays, and it still behaves that way. A photograph saved as a GIF gets flattened into a palette that produces visible banding across skies and skin tones, and the file is frequently larger than a PNG of the same picture. Converting to WebP restores the full colour range and cuts the size at the same time.

Both formats are lossy, so the conversion re-encodes rather than copies. Keep quality at 85 or above if the file is going to be edited again, and use the before and after slider to check the first image of a batch before you commit to the rest.

Set quality once and it applies to the whole batch, so a folder of two hundred files takes the same number of decisions as one. Everything runs on your own machine, so speed depends on your processor rather than on how busy a server is. If you are working to a hard limit, such as a content management system that rejects anything over 200 KB, open Settings and set a maximum file size instead of a quality percentage. The encoder then searches for the best quality that fits your budget, file by file.

All Formats. One Tool.

GIF to WebP is one of twenty-four conversion paths here, and each one has its own page with defaults already set for that pair. Whichever you land on, the tool behind it is the same: it accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP, reads ZIP archives, and handles up to 500 images in a single batch.

Conversion runs in your browser using your own processor, so nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued behind other people, and there is no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Close the tab and the files are gone from memory; they were never anywhere else.

If you need a smaller file rather than a different format, the image compressor keeps your originals and works to a quality level or a size in kilobytes. To change dimensions, the image resizer handles fit, fill and crop, or stretch across a whole folder at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about converting GIF to WebP.

Is it safe to convert GIF to WebP on SmallerImages?
Yes. Everything runs entirely in your browser. No files are uploaded to any server at any point. Your images stay on your device from start to finish.
How much smaller will WebP files be compared to my GIFs?
For most static GIF images, expect 50–80% size reduction. GIF's outdated LZW compression and hard 256-color limit make it vastly less efficient than WebP's modern VP8/VP9-based codec. Photographic GIFs and those with color gradients will see the largest gains. Simple flat-color graphics slightly less so.
Does WebP preserve GIF transparency?
Yes, and it actually improves it. GIF only supports binary (fully on or fully off) transparency, which causes jagged edges around transparent areas. WebP supports full alpha channel transparency with smooth gradients, giving you cleaner edges in the converted output. If you need to flatten transparency to a white background, use our GIF to JPEG converter instead.
What quality setting should I use for GIF to WebP?
Quality 85–90 is recommended for most GIF source material. Keep in mind that GIF is already limited to 256 colors, so WebP at any reasonable quality setting will generally look better than the source GIF while being significantly smaller. Use the before/after slider to compare before batch-downloading.
Why is GIF still so popular if it's so inefficient?
Cultural inertia, primarily. GIF became the default format for reaction images and meme content on social platforms years before WebP existed, and the format stuck. Many platforms now internally convert GIF uploads to WebP or MP4, but the.gif file format remains the interchange standard in popular culture. For static images on websites you control, there's no good reason to keep using GIF.
What about animated GIFs: can I convert those too?
This tool converts the first frame of animated GIFs to a static WebP image. Full animated GIF to animated WebP conversion is a separate, more complex process. For animated content, the HTML video element with MP4 or WebM source is generally a better approach than animated WebP for web delivery.
Can I also convert GIF to PNG, JPEG, or AVIF?
Yes. Just change the dropdown in the tool above. We have dedicated pages for GIF to PNG (lossless, full transparency), GIF to JPEG (maximum compatibility, white-fills transparency), and GIF to AVIF (smallest file size for modern browsers).
How many GIF files can I convert at once?
No limit. Convert as many files as you need in a single batch. A progress bar tracks large jobs as they process in your browser.
Is SmallerImages completely free?
Yes. No premium plans, no watermarks, no file limits, no account required, and no ads.
Can I upload a ZIP of GIF files?
Yes. Upload a.zip archive and all GIF images inside are extracted and queued automatically. Download all converted WebP files as a new ZIP in one click when done.

GIF Was Invented Before the Internet. Time to Upgrade.

GIF's 256-color limit and 1987 compression make it one of the most wasteful formats still in active use. WebP replaces it with modern compression, full color, and 50–80% smaller files. Convert your GIF library for free, privately, without uploading a single file.
