Convert GIF to PNG in 3 Steps

No account, no install, no queue. Drop your GIF files in and the PNG versions are ready to download.

  1. Step 1

    Drop your images in

Drag files onto the page, click to browse, or drop in a ZIP and every supported image inside is pulled out. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP all work, mixed together in the same batch.

  2. Step 2

    Adjust if you want to

Choose your output format and drag the quality slider. That is the whole setup. Settings holds a KB target, resizing and batch renaming if you want them, and can stay closed if you do not.

  3. Step 3

    Download your PNG files

Conversion starts on its own, so there is usually nothing to press. Batches over 40 wait for one click so nothing runs away with your machine. Download files one at a time or take the whole batch as a single ZIP.

Why Convert GIF to PNG?

GIF and PNG are both lossless formats, but that's where the similarity ends. GIF is constrained by a 256-color palette that causes visible banding and dithering on anything more complex than flat cartoon graphics. PNG supports the full 16 million color range with no palette restriction. GIF's binary transparency (a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque) causes jagged, aliased edges. PNG's full alpha channel produces smooth, professional-looking cutouts. And PNG is universally accepted by every image editor, design tool, print service, and operating system on earth. Making it the ideal target when you need to edit, print, or use GIF images in any professional workflow.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a lossless format, but its 1987-era design imposes severe limitations. The 256-color per-frame palette produces visible color banding on photographs and illustrations with gradients. Its binary transparency, where each pixel is either fully transparent or not, creates harsh, jaggy edges around transparent areas. For static images heading into an editing or design workflow, GIF's limitations make it a poor working format compared to PNG.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG was designed in 1996 specifically to replace GIF with a modern, patent-free lossless format. It supports the full 16 million color range with no palette restriction, full alpha channel transparency with smooth gradients, and better compression than GIF for most image types. PNG is the universal lossless format. Accepted by every image editor, every print service, every design tool, and every platform that handles images.

Pixel-Perfect Lossless Output

PNG is lossless by definition. Every pixel from your GIF is reproduced exactly in the PNG output. Beyond that, PNG unlocks full 16 million color depth. Removing GIF's 256-color palette restriction entirely.

ZIP Upload & Download

Upload a ZIP of GIF files. Download all converted PNGs as a single ZIP. Ideal for bulk icon library migrations, asset handoffs, and design system updates.

Batch File Renaming

Set a custom prefix, separator, numbering, and.png extension. Preview the filename pattern before downloading your converted batch.

the maximum size option

PNG is lossless, so target KB is not applicable. File size is determined entirely by image content. For size-controlled output from GIF, try GIF to WebP or GIF to JPEG instead.

Works on Every Device

Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, Android. Any modern browser runs the conversion with no installation or extensions required.

Selective Processing

Upload a large GIF library and select only the specific images you need as PNG. Only those are converted and downloaded. No pre-filtering required.

Transparency Upgraded to Full Alpha

GIF's binary transparency (on or off) is upgraded to PNG's full alpha channel in the output. Giving you smooth, anti-aliased edges instead of GIF's harsh, jaggy cutouts. Logos and icons look noticeably cleaner after conversion.

When You Need GIF to PNG

GIF to PNG is the right conversion when editing, printing, or design-tool compatibility matters more than file size.

Editing GIF Images in Photoshop or GIMP

Most image editors open GIF but immediately hit its 256-color restriction when you try to edit gradients, shadows, or color-rich areas. Converting to PNG first gives you a fully editable file with the complete color range. No color mode restrictions, no unexpected palette snapping, no dithering artifacts when you save.

Migrating Legacy Icon Sets & Clip Art

Many older icon libraries and clip art collections ship as GIF files. Converting them to PNG modernizes the format for use in Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and other design tools. With full color fidelity and smooth transparency instead of the harsh binary cutouts that GIF produces.

Archiving GIF Collections Losslessly

If you're preserving a collection of GIF images for long-term storage, PNG is the more future-proof archive format. It stores every pixel from the GIF exactly while supporting full color depth. Meaning if the original artist used dithering to simulate colors, the PNG captures that detail faithfully without reinterpretation.

Compositing Transparent GIF Assets

GIF's binary transparency causes aliasing artifacts when composited over colored backgrounds. The jagged pixel edges from 1-bit transparency become obvious. Converting to PNG upgrades those edges to smooth alpha blending, making your composited designs look significantly more polished and professional.

Handing Off GIF Assets to Designers

Sending GIF assets to a design team limits what they can do with the images. PNG is the expected format in every design workflow. It opens without restrictions, supports compositing naturally, and doesn't impose palette limitations that force workarounds. A quick batch conversion before handoff makes the designer's job significantly easier.

  • Straightforward GIF to PNG conversion that does what it says. a single PNG can run to several megabytes, and that is exactly what I needed for our asset pipeline.

  • We migrate client media libraries and there are always hundreds of GIF assets. Being able to convert them all to PNG in a couple of batches instead of one at a time has genuinely saved days of work this year.

  • Our product pages were loading slowly on mobile and it was almost entirely image weight. Converting the GIF catalogue to PNG cut the total page size by more than half.

  • Being able to set the output filenames and the ZIP name in the same pass means the files land in our repo correctly named. That is the difference between a tool I use once and one I use weekly.

  • Our client contracts forbid uploading unreleased assets to third-party servers, which rules out almost every online converter. This one runs in the browser, so the GIF files never leave the machine. I checked the network tab myself before I trusted it.

  • Been using an Imagify plan for years for this. Honestly, for straightforward GIF to PNG work this is quicker. No launch time, no export dialog, just drop and go.

  • Being able to upload a ZIP and download a ZIP is what makes this usable for real work. I am not selecting 200 GIF files by hand and I am definitely not downloading 200 PNG files one at a time.

  • Set the target file size to what my CMS allows and it found the best quality that fits. That one feature has saved me more time than everything else combined. No more converting, checking, adjusting, converting again.

GIF to PNG Conversion and Compression Explained

What changes when you convert GIF to PNG, what it costs, and how to pick a quality setting you will not regret.

GIF was designed in 1987 for 256-colour displays, and it still behaves that way. A photograph saved as a GIF gets flattened into a palette that produces visible banding across skies and skin tones, and the file is frequently larger than a PNG of the same picture. Converting to PNG restores the full colour range and cuts the size at the same time.

Both formats are lossy, so the conversion re-encodes rather than copies. Keep quality at 85 or above if the file is going to be edited again, and use the before and after slider to check the first image of a batch before you commit to the rest.

Set quality once and it applies to the whole batch, so a folder of two hundred files takes the same number of decisions as one. Everything runs on your own machine, so speed depends on your processor rather than on how busy a server is. If you are working to a hard limit, such as a content management system that rejects anything over 200 KB, open Settings and set a maximum file size instead of a quality percentage. The encoder then searches for the best quality that fits your budget, file by file.

All Formats. One Tool.

GIF to PNG is one of twenty-four conversion paths here, and each one has its own page with defaults already set for that pair. Whichever you land on, the tool behind it is the same: it accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP, reads ZIP archives, and handles up to 500 images in a single batch.

Conversion runs in your browser using your own processor, so nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued behind other people, and there is no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Close the tab and the files are gone from memory; they were never anywhere else.

If you need a smaller file rather than a different format, the image compressor keeps your originals and works to a quality level or a size in kilobytes. To change dimensions, the image resizer handles fit, fill and crop, or stretch across a whole folder at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about converting GIF to PNG.

Is it safe to convert GIF to PNG on SmallerImages?
Yes. Everything runs entirely in your browser. No files are uploaded to any server at any point. Your images stay on your device throughout.
Is the PNG output truly lossless?
Yes. PNG is a lossless format. Every pixel from your GIF is reproduced exactly in the PNG output. There is no quality degradation of any kind. PNG also removes GIF's 256-color restriction, so the output has the full color depth available to represent whatever colors are in your source image.
Does PNG preserve GIF transparency?
Yes, and it actually improves it. GIF supports only binary transparency (a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque), which causes jagged edges. PNG supports full alpha channel transparency with smooth gradients, so your converted images will have cleaner, more professional-looking edges around transparent areas. This is particularly noticeable on logos and icons.
Will PNG files be larger than my GIF files?
For simple flat-color graphics, PNG and GIF can be comparable in size. For images with gradients or more complex content, PNG may be larger because it's storing the full color depth rather than a reduced 256-color palette. If file size is a priority for web use, GIF to WebP gives you much better compression with full color.
Why convert GIF to PNG instead of WebP?
PNG is the right choice when you need to edit the image further, hand it off to a designer, use it in a print workflow, or archive it for long-term storage. PNG's universal compatibility with every image editor and design tool makes it the safe working format. WebP is the better choice when your destination is a website or web app where file size matters. Use our GIF to WebP converter for that use case.
What about animated GIFs: can I convert those?
This tool extracts the first frame of an animated GIF and converts it to a static PNG. It does not produce animated PNG (APNG) output. If you need to work with animated GIFs as static images, extracting a single representative frame for a thumbnail or preview, this is exactly what this tool does.
Can I also convert GIF to WebP, JPEG, or AVIF?
Yes. Just change the dropdown in the tool above. We have dedicated pages for GIF to WebP (50–80% smaller, modern web delivery), GIF to JPEG (maximum compatibility, white-fills transparency), and GIF to AVIF (smallest files for modern browsers).
How many GIF files can I convert at once?
No limit. Convert as many files as you need in a single batch. A progress bar tracks large jobs as they run in your browser.
Is SmallerImages completely free?
Yes. No premium plans, no watermarks, no file limits, no account required, and no ads.
Can I upload a ZIP of GIF files?
Yes. Upload a.zip archive and all GIF images inside are extracted and queued automatically. Download all converted PNGs as a new ZIP in one click when done.
