Stop Your iPhone Saving Photos as HEIC
One setting stops new photos being HEIC. This covers that, plus how to deal with the thousands already on the phone.
To stop your iPhone saving photos as HEIC, open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, and select Most Compatible. The camera saves JPEG from that moment on. The change takes 10 seconds and affects only future photographs, so the thousands already on the phone stay in High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) format.
That single setting solves the compatibility problem going forward and creates a storage problem in exchange. JPEG files run roughly twice the size of the HEIC equivalent, so a phone that held 8000 photographs will hold closer to 4000 at the same free space.
Where the setting lives
The path is Settings, Camera, Formats, and the choice is between High Efficiency and Most Compatible. High Efficiency saves HEIC images and HEVC video, while Most Compatible saves JPEG images and H.264 video.
One limitation applies to video. Selecting Most Compatible caps recording at 1080p at 60 frames per second, because 4K at 60 frames and slow motion modes require the newer HEVC encoder. Photographers who never shoot 4K will not notice, while anyone recording high frame rate video should leave High Efficiency selected and convert photographs in batches instead.
The second setting most people miss
Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC controls what happens when photographs copy to a computer, and Automatic converts HEIC to JPEG during transfer. Keep Originals sends the HEIC files unchanged.
Automatic sounds like the obvious choice and carries a cost. Conversion during transfer happens at a fixed quality you cannot set, and it slows the copy considerably on large libraries. Keeping originals and converting afterwards gives control over quality, output format and file naming, which matters when the destination is a website rather than a family archive.
Should you change the setting at all
Change it if storage is plentiful and you share photographs constantly. Keep High Efficiency if storage is tight and you share occasionally. The decision depends on how often the compatibility problem actually reaches you.

What to do with the photos you already have
To convert an existing library without installing software, follow these 5 steps.
- Copy the photographs to a computer by cable, or download an album from iCloud, where large selections arrive as a ZIP archive.
- Open the HEIC to JPEG converter in any modern browser.
- Drag the folder selection or the ZIP archive onto the drop zone.
- Set quality to 85 or 90 for a personal library, or 75 for photographs heading to a website.
- Download the converted set as one ZIP and check a few files before archiving the originals.
Up to 500 files convert in one batch, and the work runs on your own processor rather than on a server. Nothing is uploaded, so a personal photo library never reaches a company you have not checked.
Why Apple chose HEIC in the first place
HEIC stores the same photograph in roughly half the space of JPEG, which doubled effective storage on every iPhone overnight. Apple adopted it with iOS 11 in 2017, at a point when phone cameras were producing far larger files each year.
The format also carries features JPEG cannot, including depth maps for portrait mode, image sequences for Live Photos, and 16 bit colour instead of 8 bit. Those capabilities are genuinely useful inside the Apple ecosystem and largely irrelevant once a photograph leaves it, which is why converting to JPEG loses less than the specification suggests.
What you lose by switching to JPEG
- Storage. Files roughly double, so the phone fills about twice as fast.
- Colour depth. JPEG stores 8 bits per channel against 16 in HEIC, which shows only in heavy editing of skies and gradients.
- Video quality options. Most Compatible removes 4K at 60 frames per second and some slow motion modes.
- Depth information. Portrait mode still works, but the depth map is not carried in a standard JPEG.
- Nothing visible. On an ordinary photograph viewed normally, the 2 formats look the same.
Does changing the setting convert old photos
No, the setting applies only to photographs taken after the change. Apple does not rewrite an existing library, because converting thousands of files would take hours and would replace originals irreversibly.
Anyone expecting the switch to fix a Windows compatibility problem on existing holiday photographs will be disappointed. The library keeps its HEIC files, and those files still need converting. Changing the setting prevents the problem growing, while a batch conversion clears the backlog.
How to tell which format a photo is
Open the Photos app, select the picture, swipe up or tap the information button, and the format appears beside the dimensions. A file ending in .HEIC is High Efficiency, while .JPG or .JPEG confirms the compatible setting is working.
Checking after the change is worth 20 seconds, because a few camera modes ignore the Formats setting. Panorama, portrait mode and burst sequences behave differently across iOS versions, and screenshots have always been saved as PNG regardless of what Formats says. Take one ordinary photograph after switching and confirm the extension before assuming the whole camera has changed behaviour.
Freeing space without switching back
Turn on Settings, Photos, Optimise iPhone Storage, which keeps full resolution copies in iCloud and smaller versions on the device. The setting recovers most of the space that JPEG costs you.
One consequence matters when copying photographs to a computer. Optimised files on the phone are reduced versions, so a cable transfer may produce smaller images than expected, and photographs not yet downloaded copy across as empty files. Download the originals first, or export the album from the iCloud website instead, where the full resolution versions are always served.
What to do on Android and older devices
Android phones running version 10 and later can display HEIC, while older devices and many messaging apps cannot. Samsung and Google devices from recent years open the files without any extra step.
That partial support is why a photograph sent to one friend opens and the same photograph sent to another does not. JPEG is the one format that reaches every recipient without your having to ask what device they use. Converting a batch before sharing removes the guesswork, and it also removes the automatic quality reduction that messaging apps apply when they re-encode a file themselves.
Sharing without changing any setting
Sending a photograph through Mail, Messages or AirDrop to a non Apple device usually converts it to JPEG automatically. That behaviour is why a picture texted to a friend works while the same picture copied by cable does not.
The automatic conversion is convenient and gives no control over quality or dimensions. For a single photograph it is the fastest route. For 40 photographs going to a website, a content system or a print shop, a batch conversion produces consistent results and lets you set the quality and output format deliberately.
Choosing the right output format
Convert to JPG for compatibility, and to WebP when the photographs are going onto a website. JPG opens everywhere, while WebP lands 25 to 35 percent smaller at the same visual quality.
Converting HEIC straight to WebP also avoids a wasted step. Going from HEIC to JPEG to WebP re-encodes the picture twice and discards detail on each pass, while a direct conversion decodes once and encodes once. Choose the destination format first, then convert once rather than converting again later.
