Compress Photo to 20 KB for Exams

20 KB is a brutal limit and most tools quietly fail it. Here is what actually survives at that size, and how to get there.

To compress a photo to 20 KB, crop it, resize it to the exact pixel size the exam form asks for, and only then apply a 20 KB target. 20 KB is reachable on a small photo and unreachable on a full camera image, so the resize step is not optional. A 200 by 230 pixel portrait fits 20 KB at roughly quality 60. A 3024 by 4032 pixel phone photo cannot reach 20 KB at any usable quality.

20 KB is the tightest limit you will meet in the wild, and it is worth being honest about what happens at that size. A full colour photograph will soften slightly. No tool avoids this. Some tools simply hide the softening until after the upload has been accepted, which is worse than showing it.

Which forms ask for 20 KB

20 KB appears most often on older state recruitment portals and on signature uploads. Photographs usually get 20 KB to 50 KB, while signatures are held to 10 KB to 20 KB because a signature is mostly white paper.

The pattern holds across state public service commissions, police and constable recruitment boards, teacher eligibility tests and older university admission systems. Newer portals such as the central exam bodies have moved to 100 KB, because storage costs fell and applicant complaints rose. The 20 KB requirement usually signals an upload system written years ago that nobody has been funded to replace.

What survives at 20 KB and what does not

Faces survive, fine detail does not. At 20 KB the compressor keeps the shapes and colours that define a face and discards the fine texture around them.

  • Survives well: facial shape, skin tone, eye position, hair outline, clothing colour.
  • Survives poorly: individual hair strands, fabric weave, jewellery detail, text on a shirt or badge.
  • Falls apart: busy backgrounds such as bookshelves, patterned curtains and outdoor foliage.
  • Falls apart fastest: photos already saved as JPEG several times, because each save adds damage the next save cannot undo.

None of this affects acceptance. A verification officer checks whether the face is recognisable and matches the identity document. A slightly soft 20 KB photo passes that check comfortably when the dimensions are right.

How to compress a photo to 20 KB

To reach 20 KB with the best possible result, follow these 7 steps.

  1. Start from the original photo, not from a copy that has already been compressed or forwarded through a messaging app.
  2. Crop to the aspect ratio the form requires. A form asking for 200 by 230 wants a portrait shape, roughly 6 units wide by 7 tall.
  3. Crop tightly around the head and shoulders, leaving a small margin above the hair.
  4. Resize to the exact pixel dimensions listed in the instructions.
  5. Convert to JPG if the source is PNG or HEIC, because a 20 KB budget only works with lossy compression.
  6. Set 20 as the KB target and let the compressor find the highest quality that fits.
  7. View the output at full size and confirm the face is clear before uploading.

Starting from a cropped 200 pixel image at quality 70 beats starting from a full camera photo at quality 5, and the two files weigh the same. That difference is the entire reason the order of steps matters.

Dimensions that reach 20 KB comfortably

Any photo below roughly 250 by 300 pixels reaches 20 KB without visible damage. Above that, quality has to fall far enough to notice.

Photographs and signatures need different handling

A signature reaches 20 KB far more easily than a photograph, because most of a signature is flat white. Flat areas compress to almost nothing, so a signature often lands near 8 KB while still looking crisp.

Sign on unlined white paper with a dark pen, photograph or scan it in even light, then crop so the ink fills most of the frame. Avoid lined paper, because the printed lines add detail the compressor has to spend budget on. Grey shadows across the page cost kilobytes for the same reason, so hold the phone directly above the paper rather than at an angle.

Mistakes that make 20 KB impossible

  • Compressing before cropping. Cropping afterwards throws away pixels you already paid for in quality.
  • Using a screenshot of the photo. A screenshot adds the phone interface and re-encodes the image, which costs quality for no benefit.
  • Uploading a photo received on WhatsApp. Messaging apps recompress images, so the file already carries a generation of loss.
  • Leaving the file as PNG. A colour PNG at 200 by 230 pixels usually weighs 60 KB to 90 KB, and PNG has no quality setting to reduce.
  • Scanning at 600 DPI. A 600 dots per inch (DPI) scan produces 4 times the data of a 300 DPI scan with no benefit on screen.

If 20 KB still cannot be reached

Reduce the dimensions further, because dimensions control file size more strongly than quality does. Dropping from 300 pixels wide to 200 removes about 55 percent of the pixel data, which usually closes the gap on its own.

A second option is to reshoot against a plain light wall. Backgrounds carry more compression cost than most people expect, and a flat wall can cut the required file size by 20 to 30 percent before any tool is involved. When the form gives no pixel size

Use 200 by 230 pixels for a photograph and 140 by 60 for a signature when the form states only a KB limit. Those two sizes are the informal standard across Indian recruitment portals, and a form that omits dimensions was almost certainly built against them.

Check the upload box on screen before committing. Many portals display a preview immediately after upload, and a photograph that appears stretched, squashed or cropped through the chin in that preview will be marked defective during verification even though the file passed the size check. Replacing the file at that point costs 2 minutes, while a defective photograph discovered after the window closes costs the whole application.

Checking a 20 KB photo before you upload

Open the compressed file at 100 percent zoom and look at 3 areas: the eyes, the hairline and the edge between face and background. Compression damage appears in those 3 places first, so a photo that looks clean there will look clean everywhere.

  • The eyes should show a distinct pupil and iris rather than a single dark smudge.
  • The hairline should stay a defined edge rather than blending into the background.
  • Flat areas such as a plain wall should stay smooth, without square patches of slightly different colour.
  • The file must open in a normal image viewer, which confirms the download completed and the file is not truncated.
  • The extension must read .jpg, matching the format the portal expects.

Preparing photo and signature together

Most forms want both files in one session, so prepare both before opening the application. Applicants commonly lose a submission window because the signature was left until the final step.

Resize both files first, then compress both to their separate targets, 20 KB for the photograph and 10 KB for the signature. Drop both into the compressor together and each file gets its own quality calculation.
