Bulk Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Windows can convert HEIC one file at a time. Here is how to do several hundred at once, free, without buying the codec.

To bulk convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 11 without installing anything, open a browser based converter, drop the whole folder in, and download the results as one ZIP. The built in Windows route converts one file at a time and requires a paid codec, which makes it unsuitable for a phone full of photographs.

Windows 11 can open a High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) file only after you buy the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. The Photos app can then save each file as JPEG individually. That path works for a single holiday photo and fails for 400 of them.

Why Windows charges for HEIC support

HEIC images are encoded with High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), and HEVC carries patent licensing fees that Microsoft passes on. The charge is a licensing decision rather than a technical limitation.

Apple pays those licence fees across its own hardware, so an iPhone opens HEIC without any extra step. Microsoft chose to charge Windows users separately instead. The result is a compatibility problem that looks technical and is actually commercial, which explains why no free Microsoft update has ever fixed it.

How to convert HEIC to JPG in bulk

To convert an entire folder of iPhone photographs, follow these 6 steps.

  1. Copy the photographs from the iPhone to a folder on the computer, or export them from iCloud as a ZIP archive.
  2. Open the HEIC to JPEG converter in any modern browser, including Edge, Chrome and Firefox.
  3. Select every file in the folder with Ctrl and A, then drag the selection onto the drop zone. A ZIP archive can be dropped in directly instead.
  4. Set the quality, where 85 to 90 keeps the photographs looking identical to the originals.
  5. Start the batch and wait. Conversion speed depends on your processor rather than on your internet connection.
  6. Download the results as a single ZIP and extract it into a new folder.

The row that matters most for family photographs is the last column. An upload based converter sends every picture to a server owned by someone you have not checked, while a browser converter keeps the decoding on your own machine.

What happens to quality and file size

Converting HEIC to JPG loses a small amount of detail and roughly doubles the file size. Both formats are lossy, so the conversion decodes the HEIC and encodes a new JPEG, and that second encode discards a little more information.

At quality 90 the difference is very hard to see on an ordinary photograph. The size change surprises people more, because HEVC compresses about twice as efficiently as JPEG. A 2 MB HEIC file typically becomes a 4 MB JPEG at matching quality. Convert to WebP instead when the destination is a website, since WebP lands close to the original HEIC size.

Handling Live Photos and bursts

A Live Photo is a HEIC still paired with a short MOV video, and converting produces only the still image. The motion is stored in a separate file that a picture converter does not read.

That behaviour is usually what people want, since the still frame is the photograph and the video clip is rarely needed off the phone. Burst sequences behave differently and export as many individual HEIC files, which is one reason a folder copied from an iPhone often contains far more images than expected. Batch conversion handles both cases without any special setting.

Getting the photos off the iPhone first

Connect the iPhone by cable and copy from the DCIM folder, or download an album from iCloud as a ZIP. The cable method is faster for large libraries and does not depend on upload bandwidth.

  • By cable: unlock the phone, tap Trust, then open This PC, Apple iPhone, Internal Storage, DCIM.
  • By iCloud: sign in at the iCloud website, select the photographs, and download. Large selections arrive as ZIP archives.
  • Check the transfer setting: iPhone Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC. Keep Originals copies HEIC files unchanged, while Automatic converts some of them to JPEG during transfer.
  • Watch for zero byte files: photographs stored only in iCloud and not downloaded to the phone copy across empty.

How long a large batch takes

Conversion speed depends on your processor and the size of the photographs, not on your internet connection. A typical laptop converts roughly 2 to 5 photographs per second at 12 megapixels, so 500 files finish in a few minutes.

Keep the browser tab in the foreground while a batch runs, because browsers throttle background tabs to save power and a minimised window slows the work considerably. Close other heavy applications for a very large batch. Splitting 2000 photographs into 4 batches of 500 is more reliable than attempting all of them at once, and it lets you check the first set before committing to the rest.

Choosing the right quality setting

Use quality 85 to 90 for photographs you want to keep, and quality 75 when the files are heading to a website. Quality 100 is wasteful, since it roughly doubles the file size for a difference almost nobody can see.

Does converting keep the photo dates

The capture date is stored in EXIF metadata, and a converter that preserves EXIF keeps the photograph in the right place in a timeline. Photo libraries sort by capture date rather than by file date, so losing that field scatters an album.

Location data lives in the same metadata block. Anyone sharing photographs publicly may prefer that field removed, since it records where each picture was taken to within a few metres. Decide which behaviour you want before converting a large library, because re-running the batch afterwards is easier than editing hundreds of files individually.

Converting several hundred photos at once

Drop a ZIP archive straight in rather than selecting files by hand, because every supported image inside is extracted and converted automatically. An iCloud download or a phone backup usually arrives as a ZIP already.

Conversion runs on your own processor, so a large batch uses the computer for a few minutes and does not touch your data allowance. Nothing is uploaded, which means family photographs, documents and screenshots never reach a server. The result is a single ZIP of JPEG files that opens on any Windows machine, any Android phone and any website, with no codec purchase and no software installation.

Keep the HEIC originals until you have checked the converted set. Open 5 or 6 files from different parts of the batch, confirm the dates and orientation are correct, and only then move the originals to an archive drive. Deleting the source files immediately after a conversion is the one step in this process that cannot be undone, and a 2 minute check removes the risk entirely.
